Emotions - Day 4: Today I want to explore the emotion of Disgust/Disgusted and what it looks like on the face of both Men and Women. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Disgust is another of the original six basic emotions described by Eckman. Disgust can be displayed in a number of ways including: Body language: turning away from the object of disgust Physical reactions: such as vomiting or retching Facial expressions: such as wrinkling the nose and curling the upper lip This sense of revulsion can originate from a number of things, including an unpleasant taste, sight, or smell. Researchers believe that this emotion evolved as a reaction to foods that might be harmful or fatal. When people smell or taste foods that have gone bad, for example, disgust is a typical reaction. Poor hygiene, infection, blood, rot, and death can also trigger a disgust response. This may be the body's way of avoiding things that may carry transmittable diseases. People can also experience moral disgust when they observe others engaging in behaviors that they find distasteful, immoral, or evil. ------------------------------------------------------------------- This one is interesting to me as I always saw disgust as a reaction and not so much of an emotion. You can almost always tell when someone is disgusted by something as the reaction can be quite visceral. The lips pulling in as if to avoid the subject of the disgust, the wrinkled nose as if trying to seal the nasal passage, and the body language, turning away quickly, pulling back or away. In the images of the men the reactions are very very pronounced. You can clearly see the wrinkled nose, the lips pulled back, the forehead is wrinkled. Their is tension in the face, they are definitely not pleased with what is making them disgusted. I think the best representation for the men is the bottom right. In the images of the women the reaction are a little more subtle. The nose is still wrinkled and the lips are still pulling back to an extent. There is still tension in the face but as I said it is more subtle. I think the best representation for the women is the bottom left. What do you think of the analysis? Did I get it right?
